Fireworks on Mission Bay
Free July 3rd fireworks on Mission Bay set to a custom soundtrack heard only on 100.7 BIG FM.
History of the Fireworks Show
In 1987, the Fire Marshall said we could no longer fire the fireworks from the point, so we started renting a barge for the middle of the bay. That also meant we had to better organize the safety perimeter on the bay, which was handled by Mission Bay Yacht Club. John Leppert passed away in 2001 and with his passing, the show lost the contributions from people outside the club but we were able to raise enough money from the voluntary donations of members of MBYC. In 2012, the costs to support the show were too much for the MBYC membership and for the first time in almost 30 years, we didn’t have fireworks on Sail Bay.
The show stayed dark for 10 years! In 2022, the Rear Commodore of Mission Bay Yacht Club went on a mission to bring back the show. A Go Fund Me was started and people from the community started donating to bring the show back. Belmont Park was the first big donor, followed by Redline Construction, and nearly all the hotels around the bay. The money was raised and we were able to enjoy the fireworks show that our beach community had missed for so many years.
This year, the show will be even bigger and better! We still need help from the local community residents and businesses!
